Forbes: Can Austin become the Dubai of the United States?!?

Posted on 12:07 by Unknown

Forbes has a great article on how the Tenth Amendment might still save the United States; after illustrating how Washington has usurped the functions of local and state jurisdictions over the past century, the author asks:
Can American cities ever hope to be the platform where the future plays out again? This will never be our fate as long as all eyes turn to Washington. America is not one big city. Local initiative by people who own the local economy is the only solution. Individuals are much better at detecting market opportunity than government. In fact, America’s greatest strength has been its capacity to reinvent our economy by allowing entrepreneurs to disturb incumbent industries and in the course of this process make cities themselves more competitive.

Happily, because America still has states that are ready to turn a blind eye towards Washington there is hope that some American cities will be global players in the future. In the face of the chronic slow growth/near recession conditions that Washington appears powerless to solve, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Florida and Tennessee have encouraged local economies by making policy much more conducive to business. The cities in these states, with their concentration of talent and workers, are certain to benefit. When states eliminate income taxes, lower regulatory burdens, and municipalities manage themselves along fiscally conservative principals, businesses intent on growing will come and, importantly, so will the innovators and entrepreneurs who will make the next generation of businesses.

If any American cities are likely to be included on a list of world beating places in fifty years it is likely that Austin will be first among them. Perhaps because they are Texans, its elite has never seen Washington as the place where the future can be seen or certainly not made. Austin is a hotbed of innovation and business creation. Fueled by a great university and benefiting from a culture that is happy to show anyone how to get things done, its growth over the last two decades has been remarkable. Its governor taunts California on the radio! But, beware, Austin, until Washington sees that our economy is composed by people working in it, close to it, and owning it, all of which happens in cities just like yours, don’t expect anyone will mistake you for Dubai in fifty years.
Living in Austin, I'll offer a few thoughts:
  • The University of Texas' reputation is greatly exaggerated.
  • Many local elites in Austin LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE what Washington is selling.
  • At the end of the day, localities and states that reduce their exposure to Washington will emerge from the coming global economic cluster[REDACTED] stronger relative to those who refuse to see the obvious.  Thus, any city in Texas qualifies.  Any effort to protect Austin from Washington will come from average citizens, NOT the local elite.
I hope this helps.

How 3D Printing Technologies will put the Gun Grabbers out of business (and boost Texas' economy!)

Posted on 17:36 by Unknown
Two weeks ago, we put out a call to find the most innovative firearms manufacturer in Texas; this certainly qualifies:

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • 3-D printed firearm anyone can download and produce.
  • Defense Distributed.
  • Preserving the Second Amendment over the internet.
  • In the next decade, the majority of Americans will have 3-D printers in their home.
  • This guy has five employees.
This guy lives less than five blocks from us; we hope to have more from him soon.

Comptroller Susan Combs: John Galt is Alive and Well and He's Living in Texas

Posted on 21:26 by Unknown
Great CPAC panel featuring Texas Comptroller Susan Combs: Has Atlas Shrugged?!? Business in Obama's America:

Highlights:
  • Technology has altered the pace of change.
    • Overwhelms Centralized Bureaucracy
  • Small Businesses innovate 11x faster than Big Businesses.
  • Under Obama, fewer small businesses have been formed and more have failed than at any time in 40 years.
  • Big business and big labor can navigate big government; small business cannot.
  • We spend more money on education than any other country for worse results.
  • Susan Combs:
    • "John Galt is alive and well and he's living in Texas."
    • Some parts of the Federal government (like the EPA) just don't like successful people.
    • Texas has a diversified economy.
    • We love to sue the federal government in Texas
    • Big government is not your friend if you're a risk taker.
  • Jeanette Prenger
    • Her current Health Care bill is $21,000 per month; under Obamacare it will go up to $58,000.

Who is the most innovative Ammo Maker in Texas?!?

Posted on 16:51 by Unknown

The other night on Facebook, I made this prediction:
Random Thought: We're close to the top of a bubble; before the end of the year, the price of ammo will collapse.
The reason I believe this is because the market for guns and ammunition is an example of what economists call 'perfect competition.'  The product is (relatively) homogenous and barriers to entry are (relatively) modest.  Given this backdrop, with rising demand causing shortages, Economics 101 suggests that new sellers will enter the market.

Obviously, that equation doesn't account for interference in the market by the federal government.  While I understand those concerns, I just don't think the Federal government is competent enough to pull it off.  I have a funny feeling the number of small scale entrepreneurs who will enter the market in the next 12 to 18 months will overwhelm Washington's ability to stop it.

Cahnman's Musings would like to solicit reader feedback.  Who, in your opinion, is the most innovative ammunition manufacturer currently operating in the state of Texas?!?  Why?!?  What have they done in the past 6 to 12 months that makes you confident they can consistently outwit Washington.  Cahnman's Musings would like to help publicize their business.

Big Ticket Items for the 83rd Texas Legislature

Posted on 11:39 by Unknown

With the 83rd Texas Legislature one-third over, and conservatives off to a bad start, it's time to re-group and prioritize.  To protect and strengthen Texas' economy, we need to alter the trajectory of state spending.  The following five items will maintain Texas as place where entrepreneurs can risk their capital and achieve a decent rate of return.
  1. Texas Budget Compact -- Cahnman's Musings was an early supporter of the Texas Budget Compact.  It remains our top priority, though we remain frustrated with Governor Perry's timidity.  Limiting government spending is the foundation of prosperity.

  2. School Choice -- In order to limit state spending, you have to get education under control.  K-12 Education remains 40% of state spending.  For that money, K-12 education remains an array of boondoggles and bureaucracy.  The CSCOPE scandal re-enforces what we already knew about public education.  In order to keep state spending under control (and pre-empt the next CSCOPE), you need to take education dollars out of the hands of bureaucrats and put it into the hands of parents.
  3. Medicaid -- Medicaid has been the fastest growing component of state spending for two decades.  In 2001, Medicaid was 14% of the budget; today it's 25%.  If the Obamacare Medicaid expansion goes through, that will rise to 33%.  Medicaid is a broken program that hurts the poor.  We can't keep pouring money we don't have into a program that doesn't work.
  4. Pensions/Transparency -- Local government debt in Texas is $324 billion.  Pension obligations are a big chunk of that debt.  The interrelated issues of local debt and pension obligations are a time bomb the legislature should defuse before it becomes a crisis.
  5. Repeal the Margins Tax -- This atrociously designed tax is unworthy of a state like Texas; end it, don't mend it.
In business, the Pareto principle states that you get 80% of your results from 20% of your activity; this list is that 20%.
