Team Dewhurst's Gift to a Hostile Media

Posted on 13:57 by Unknown

Last night, in an interview with Hot Air, Lt. Governor Dewhurst made the following asinine statement:
“We have reports, and I have my staff taking a look at the video,” Dewhurst explained, “and if I find, as I’ve been told, examples of the media waving and trying to inflame the crowd, incite them in the direction of a riot, I’m going to take action against them.” Dewhurst continued, “We take a democratic policy seriously.” I asked whether Dewhurst could confirm whether members of the media took part in pushing the demonstration forward. “We have reports that members of the media on the floor, on the floor of the Senate, were looking up at the people in the gallery, waving their hands, trying to motivate them to yell more,” he replied. “If I find examples of that, proof certain on our video,” Dewhurst warned, “I’m going to address this firmly.”
Which, predictably, the media used to portray Dewhurst as some sort of tyrant.

Austin Chronicle: Dewhurst versus the First Amendment:
In the collective mind of the GOP, who were the people who shouted down the backdoor abortion ban in Senate Bill 5? First, it was feminazis. Then it was communists. Then Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst blamed (for a few brief hours) the Texas legislative press corps.

This gem came about yesterday when the Dew called in to the Ed Morrissey Show: He's one of the talking heads on Hot Air, the right wing noise machine founded by Michelle Malkin.

....

This would all seem vaguely farcical, if the right wasn't already trying to target the press. For example, conservative think tank Empower Texans was taking baseless pot shots at Erica Grieder of Texas Monthly for alleged bias when she Tweeted "If asked to choose between decorum and my fellow Texans, I will choose Texans every time, on ANY issue."
Dallas Morning News: Will Dewhurst have Texas Press Corps arrested?!?
Lt. Gov David Dewhurst says his office is reviewing video of the Senate filibuster and  protest that doomed an abortion bill to see if the media should be arrested. Dewhurst told a conservative web site that he suspects reporters were complicit in inciting a riot. He offered no evidence, but said his staff is looking over the tapes of the final, chaotic night last Tuesday.
This was a sloppy, unforced error on the part of Team Dewhurst.  It's not a secret that the pro-abortion forces are trying to portray themselves standing against some alleged abuse of power.  Team Dewhurst shouldn't make their job easier.

KVUE Succeeds where KXAN Fails

Posted on 06:23 by Unknown

KVUE news continues to distinguish itself with, by far, the best coverage of the ongoing AISD bond election; here's their report from last night:

In this report, you will notice that KVUE's Kris Betts, unlike KXAN's Erin Cargile, mentions that AISD is already sitting on a substantial pile of cash; while Betts, regrettably, does not use the $229 million figure (p. 105), at least she discusses how facts belie AISD claims of poverty.

Two and a half cheers for KVUE news; Austin voters would benefit if the rest of the media followed their lead.

Austin Chronicle Mischaracterizes Travis County Taxpayers Union

Posted on 14:22 by Unknown

Those also who seek my life lay snares for me;
Those who seek my hurt speak of destruction,
And plan deception all the day long.

Psalm 38:12

Perusing this story in the Austin Chronicle, by Richard Whittaker, about the strange timing of certain AISD personnel moves, Cahnman's Musings noticed this paragraph:
But opposition to the school bond cannot be written off solely to posturing by Republican front groups. [Emphasis Mine] Last November's board elections became a community referendum on Carstarphen, and the 2013 bond election is shaping up the same way. If voters have too little faith in her ability to manage their funds, that could endanger dollars for essential investments.
The antecedent to which the phrase "Republican front groups" refers is the Travis County Taxpayers Union, a local watchdog group (Full disclosure: Cahnman's Musings is loosely working with TCTU on the bond issue).  While Whittaker doesn't explain this designation, our educated guess is that is that Whittaker based his claim on the fact that TCTU president Don Zimmerman is a former member of the Texas State Republican Executive Committee.  Unfortunately, for Richard Whittaker, recent history belies the "Republican Front Group" allegation.

Last fall, the Travis County Taxpayers Union opposed Prop. 1, a hospital bond that Rick Perry supported; does Richard Whittaker honestly believe a "Republican front group" would oppose an initiative supported by Rick Perry?!?

This low-turnout May election deserves honest coverage, without reckless charges being thrown in the press; this sort of media coverage is yet another reason voters should slow this process down and vote AGAINST AISD props 1-4.

KXAN News Omits Pertinent Bond Issue Information

Posted on 07:16 by Unknown

On Monday, KXAN (the Austin affiliate of NBC news) reporter Erin Cargile delivered the following report on the ongoing Austin Independent School District bond issue election:

Rooftop view of AISD bond repairs

In the report, Cargile spends a full minute out of the 90 second report touring a school that AISD has allowed to fall into disrepair despite $853 million in previous bond approvals in 2004 and 2008; in her report, Cargile neglects to mention that AISD is still sitting on $229 Million (p. 105) in 'authorized but not issued' bonds from those previous elections.

Cahnman's Musings does not know whether Cargile's sin of omission was due to ignorance or malice.  Neither do we care; Jesus forgives Erin Cargile and we do as well.  With early voting ongoing, setting the record straight is paramount.

Cahnman's Musings respectfully requests an on-air apology and correction from Erin Cargile during the first minute of tonight's 10PM KXAN broadcast.  AISD is currently sitting on $229 million in 'authorized but not issued' bonds from previous elections.  This is pertinent information that informed voters deserve.

Readers can contact KXAN here.

Update: Welcome to Watchdog Wire readers.

#IWantTheBlazeBecause; a follow up letter to AT&T C.E.O. Randall L. Stevenson

Posted on 13:35 by Unknown

Mr. Randall L. Stevenson
Chief Executive Officer
AT&T
1 AT&T Plaza
Dallas, TX 75202

Dear Sir,

I am writing to follow up on my letter from last Monday, to which you have not yet responded.  As your loyal customer, I wrote you to request you immediately add theBlazeTV to your U200 lineup on the same financial terms as MSNBC.  I am writing today to follow up on the status of this request.

Over the past six weeks, tens of thousands of loyal AT&T customers have contacted AT&T to request you add theBlaze.  AT&T has failed to respond.  Why is AT&T ignoring tens-of-thousands of loyal customers?!?

Right now, AT&T forces U200 customers to subsidize seven left-leaning networks compared to one and a half on the other side. U200 customers deserve more programming options.  As a company that claims to value competition, I trust AT&T wants to give its customers as many programming options as possible.

Competition is the lifeblood of American prosperity.  Adding theBlaze to the U200 (on the same financial terms as MSNBC) will promote the competition from which everyone benefits.  Finally, adding theBlaze is a tangible step AT&T can take to support a cutting edge company based in Texas, YOUR home state.

I am writing to follow up on my request to you from Monday, March 11.  As a loyal customer, I asked you to add theBlazeTV to your U200 lineup on the same financial terms as MSNBC.  I have yet to hear back from you.  Why not?!?  I look forward to prompt restitution of this matter.

Sincerely,
Adam Cahn
Austin, TX
March, 18 2013

P.S. If you agree with this letter; Cahnman's Musings respectfully requests you post it to AT&T's facebook page here.
